Today is Guru Purnima. The significance of same is given below.

SRI GURUBYO NAMAHA
GURUR BRAHMA GURUR VISHNO
GURUR DEVO MAHESHWARAHA
GURUR SAKSHAAT PARA BRAHMA
TASMAI SRI GURAVE NAMAHA

· Guru Purnima, or the Full Moon of the Guru, is celebrated in the month of Ashadha (July-August). This day is significant for disciples who seek to get initiated by their Guru, students who desire to get the blessings of their teachers, and for everyone who wants to honor persons of great wisdom and learning.

· It is the ancient equivalent of the modern day teacher’s day and is devoted to the honor of the teachers or the gurus of yore who used to follow the guru-shishya parampara. In ancient India, a guru was not considered just an ordinary guru but was given the status of God as is evident from the following lines by Kabir—

Guru Govind dou khade, kake lagoon paye
Balihari Guru aapne, jin Govind diyo milae.
Here the Guru is given precedence even over the God Almighty because it is the Guru who has shown the way to God.

· It is believed that Guru Vyas was born to sage Parashara and Sathyawati on this day. At the same time, it is also believed that he started writing the Brahma Sutras on this day. He is also known as Ved Vyas as he was instrumental in gathering all the Vedic hymns scattered here and there. He was the one who divided the Vedas into four parts- the Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda. He also wrote the 18 Puranas, the Mahabharata and the Srimad Bhagwata. Sage Vyas even taught Bhagwan Dattatreya who is the combination of the divine Trinity, namely Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Bhagwan Dattatrey in turn was himself known as the guru of gurus.

· The Greatness of Guru

Traditionally the Guru is considered an embodiment of the Trinity Gods namely Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The word 'Guru' means remover of darkness (In Sanskrit, “Gu” means darkness, “Ru” means remover). Thus, Guru Purnima is the day of eradicating ignorance and illuminating our lives with knowledge. On this Full Moon of the Guru, the Guru can inspire us to overcome our limitations, even lethargy and conjure a life of wonderful possibilities.

· On this day, offerings are given to gurus and their blessings are sought. It is believed that offerings made on this fold give manifold results. The guru shishya relationship is considered very sacred and they both seek the welfare of each other. The student desires the blessings of the guru to stay with him forever and guide him or her forever. At the same time, the guru desires that the shishya should become an able person himself and perpetuate his teachings.

· Swami Sivananda asks: "Do you realize now the sacred significance and the supreme importance of the Guru's role in the evolution of man? It was not without reason that the India of the past carefully tended and kept alive the lamp of Guru-Tattva. It is therefore not without reason that India, year after year, age after age, commemorates anew this ancient concept of the Guru, adores it and pays homage to it again and again, and thereby re-affirms its belief and allegiance to it. For, the true Indian knows that the Guru is the only guarantee for the individual to transcend the bondage of sorrow and death, and experience the Consciousness of the Reality.
