⚡️Athlete Shoutout⚡️ @taylordresch3 showed her grit, focus and gifts as we worked through The #CrossFitOpen this year. I'm excited about all we've learned and for what's to come as she chases after her dreams.

I never say "my athlete" about the people I work with. I GET to coach them, we CHOOSE to work together, we are a team, they are not "mine." They are athletes I work FOR and WITH, but there is no possession whatsoever so saying "mine" is just not my style. I feel blessed to be ABLE to build relationships with amazing people who happen to be incredible athletes too. My goal is to support and guide these individuals to help them pursue their biggest goals. 💪🏽👊🏽

Best job I could ever imagine. 🙌🏽

What an honor it was to finish the 2017 @crossfitgames open with 2x Games Athlete @teamcarleen and crew at @crossfitxfactor with @biggaladyk cheering us on. I've learned a lot about myself throughout this year's open season and the challenges have allowed me to develop as an athlete and a person. @mentality_wod and I have really grown our coach/athlete relationship. After last year's Games, Matt and I discussed whether I'd sit this year out or not and finish my last year on active duty.... we decided to push forward with training with our eye on the long term goal and I'm so thankful we did. Excited about where we are right now and where we are headed. I'll be wrapping up this season's thoughts in a blog post soon! So proud of all my @valkyrie_performance athletes who crushed their goals and continue to inspire me everyday. I hope everyone loved this year's Open as much as I did!! 💋 #USMC #ConjugateStrong #ValkyriePerformance #Accountability #Integrity #Attitude #511 #AlwaysReady #HoldTheStandard #CleanAthlete #HyperFit #CrossFit #LikeaValkyrie

💥Athlete Shoutout💥 I've been coaching my neighbor as a "garage gym CrossFitter" for 5+ years and he completed 17.5 today to wrap up the Open. Double-unders have been his biggest hurdle over the years and he just rolled through 350 of them!!!
-
There's something so special about being able to excel and compete in this Sport without any fancy equipment or facility. Garage gyms are the best. 🏡💪🏽💙

💥Athlete Shoutout💥 Wise words from @aholt18 about the journey. Watching her push and improve over the past couple of years has been such a gift. A coach can't ask for anything more than someone who has a positive attitude, deep passion, thirst for knowledge and a willingness to do whatever it takes.
-
When you lay it all out there, great things happen. So proud of you Amy

17.5 is done and I'm not sure I'll redo it. It was quite painful and a good way to finish out the open with all of its ups and downs. I'm about where I thought I'd be and I can't be mad about my weaknesses because they are a part of me and a part of my journey is overcoming them. As an athlete I'm unsatisfied but as a person I am proud of my efforts and of my improvements because they reflect an entire year of hard work!! I've worked hard and gotten better, and I'm happy. #cf7c #crossfit #M6open #allpartofthejourney #junkheadbands #itwaspainful #17point5 #bestcoach #onto2018 #thereisnosecret #justhardwork #aboutthejourney

Sure, there may be things that you "wish" you did differently. There might be moments that you "wish" you could change.
.
But, there is always at least 1 takeaway. So, no need to beat yourself up… just learn something from the opportunity you had.
.
CHANGE YOUR DAMN PERSPECTIVE

Spencer Hendel knows just where he is on the leaderboard in a competition.
#
Do YOU prefer to look at the point standings or would you rather not know? Why do you think that helps you?

We all define success a little bit differently.
-
When I talk with athletes, I ask a lot of questions. I want to know what they think success is, how they'll know if they're on the right track and how they'll determine if they've succeeded or not.
-
I've changed how I view success over the years and want to challenge your perceptions too.
-
Did you learn? I'd call that a success.
-
Did you make a positive impact? You succeeded
-
Do you feel better because you gave it your best? Success.
-
Is your passion and enthusiasm still burning? Huge success.
-
Are you able to see the positives? Win.
-
Are you becoming even more aware of all that you have to be grateful for? Victory.
-
Did you build stronger, more meaningful relationships? Major freaking success.
-
Typically, we only think we're “successful” if we beat someone else at something, or beat a specific marker. So, in essence, we are always trying to “one up” ourselves or others, so that we can come out victorious, and therefore feel happy, empowered, or superior.
-
If that’s how you define “success," then you’ll often come up short. You may get discouraged, and down on yourself. If you’re regularly feeling like you “just can’t win” or you haven’t felt super “successful” recently, then you may need to change your perspective on “success” and “failure."
-
When you start to redefine “winning/success," you might find that you’re able to dominate your competition and your goals because you’re more confident and focused.
-
If where you end up on the leaderboard/scoreboard is how you define success, I think ya got some rethinking to do 😬😬

Coaching Tip
-
1) Telling an athlete "don't focus on the guy next to you" or "stop focusing on the crowd" isn't very helpful.
-
2) Yelling "FOCUS" to your athlete doesn't do anything beneficial.
-
Instead, give the athlete very specific cues and tell them exactly what to focus on. Tell them what to do and how to do it. Keep the cues short and direct. Say your cues with a calm slow voice when you want the athlete to move with composure and slow down and say your cues louder with more enthusiasm when it's time to grind and push.
-
Examples: shoulder back, chest up, eyes forward, breathe at the top, drive through your feet, squeeze your butt, head through, quick and aggressive on the kip, relax your face, get tall then pull under, smooth is fast stay steady or GRAB THE MF BAR AND GO LIKE CRAZY UNTIL THE BUZZER, etc.

Right now, set a specific target. If you want to get better at "everything" and don't we all - then choose 1-3 specific goals that you want to achieve and get on a plan. This is the same for personal and fitness/performance goals.
---
Decide what you're going to work on, how often and when you'll reassess. Get some coaching and accountability. Record the data. Share your progress and results.
